Types of Residential Garage Door Openers
Selecting the right type of door opener for your garage is just as important as choosing the right type of garage door. When selecting a garage door opener the size of your garage, the weight of your door, and how much available overhead space you have above the garage are all deciding factors in proper selection.
Chain-driven operators
Chain-driven openers use a standard bicycle-style chain that will need to be lubricated and tightened on a regular basis. When properly adjusted they can be very quiet and trouble-free. Usually the least expensive option, the chain-drive opener is a good option for detached garages or homes where bedrooms are not directly above the garage.
Screw drive operators
Screw drive openers drive a trolley back and forth on the rail using a direct drive from the motor to a long screw. When these openers get older they are usually not as quiet or efficient. To maintain efficiency, screw drive openers need to be lubricated 3-4 times a year on regular basis.
Belt-drive operators
Belt drive openers work just like the standard chain drive only they use a belt. They operate quietly and require little maintenance. A belt-drive operator is a good option when there is a bedroom over or near the garage.
Direct-drive operators
Direct drive openers mount directly to the spring system to the side of the garage door. Having only one moving part, the direct-drive offers an extremely quiet operation. This opener works well in situations where the garage door travels high up into the ceiling rather than straight back overhead.
